Is the Volkswagen Atlas, Ford Explorer or Honda Pilot a Better Three-Row SUV?

If you need a seven-passenger crossover, we think your best option is going to be the Volkswagen Atlas. It offers a more comfortable, spacious ride than the Honda Pilot and Ford Explorer, and includes the superior styling you love to see from Volkswagen.

Size-wise, the Atlas wins over the more squished Pilot. Third-row passengers will be happier if you've opted for the much-greater third-seat legroom of the Volkswagen. Front row seating is also roomier in the VW, and seats are more supportive. The Atlas seats are contoured to provide comfort to the human body. We couldn't, under oath, say the same about the Pilot.

With a longer wheelbase than the Pilot, the VW Atlas is able to further spread out bumps and pavement flaws to give you a nicer ride. The Atlas cabin is quieter than the Pilot, and the materials are more upscale. If you love hard, shiny plastics, you might want to opt for the Pilot, but we much prefer the refined interior of the Volkswagen Atlas.

The Atlas also provides a 6.5-inch touchscreen that provides a better interface than the Pilot's standard 5-inch display. The Volkswagen infotainment system is easy to use, and the touchscreen and center console design are very clean and intuitive.

The VW Atlas offers up significantly more cargo space than the Pilot. There's room for bags behind all three rows, and you can fold down whichever seats you need to in order to carry larger items. Roof rails are standard, so if all seats are occupied you can easily store cargo in a cargo box on the roof. Family trips just got easier!

Though the base model Volkswagen Atlas starting MSRP is just $30,500 and the base model Honda Pilot MSRP is $30,745, the Atlas somehow gives you a much more enjoyable drive for a couple hundred dollars less. You'll love the polished, quiet interior, even if the quiet is broken by a bunch of kids giggling behind you.
